Special beer is the collective name for all beers that are not actually (standard) lager. Actually, specialty beer is quite a strange name, because for many centuries we have only brewed 'special beer'. Pils is a relatively new beer style, which was only developed in 1842. It was a huge hit, because in a relatively short time Pils knocked many other styles off the scene. Especially after the Second World War, there was little beer available in the Netherlands, except pilsner.
