A stout is a dark, black beer, brewed with roasted malts. Adding this roasted malt to the brewing mix gives the beer its distinctive black color and dark tones. Think of chocolate, coffee, roasted tones, salmiak, liquorice, and much more!
The stout is, historically, a strong form of the porter, and was known as the 'stout porter' or 'strong porter'. Nowadays there are many different types of stouts: the 'regular' stout has an alcohol percentage of around 8%, the Imperial Stout is usually around 10% and higher. The Pastry Stout is brewed with lactose (an unfermentable sugar) and contains additives such as vanilla, fruit, and as crazy as you can imagine.
