The Quadrupel Beer Style is a fairly recent development. It was first introduced by the Trappist brewery de Koningshoeve, with their La Trappe Quadrupel, in 1992. It is a malty beer with a high alcohol percentage, usually around 10%. Amber-colored to dark brown, with a clear malty character, notes of caramel and often considerable complexity. Well-known examples are the St. Bernardus Abt 12 and the Rochefort 10. Often also beers that you can let mature for about 3 years, so that madeirisation can occur. This gives you tones of Madeira and Sherry in the beer.
